CHSTV Sweeps Acclaimed National Broadcast Awards -
Students Capture Top Three Spots; 1st Time in Contest History!
For the first time in the history of the Student Television Network-sponsored High School Broadcast Journalism Nationals Contest, a single school – Carlsbad High School – captured first-, second- and third-place honors. Carlsbad High School TV (CHSTV) Advisor Doug Green reports, “This acclaimed annual contest is the largest scholastic broadcast journalism competition in the nation. This year, more than 70 schools competed, with hundreds of entries submitted. We are so pleased to achieve this historic recognition in one of the most competitive categories.”
First-place honors, which tied with another school’s submission, went to Rory Gallagher and Max Dana for “Frederick’s Story: Surviving the Rwandan Genocide.” Capturing second place was a film produced by Max Dana and Delaney Drost on Walk for Life, a San Diego event supporting families who have lost loved ones to suicide. In third place was a piece produced by Max Dana and Delaney Drost on Therapeutic Riding, a local organization that teaches disabled children to ride horses as a way of building confidence.
These awards mark Max Dana's fourth and Rory Gallagher’s third national award. In June 2009, both students, who have received other prestigious awards, traveled to New York City, where they met with Diane Sawyer on the set of “Good Morning, America” and were behind-the-scenes guests of the show for two days. Carlsbad High School TV Holocaust Documentary Receives Prestigious Peacemaker Award
The Carlsbad High School Television (CHSTV) student-produced documentary, We Must Remember, has received a 2010 Peacemaker Award presented by the San Diego-based National Conflict Resolution Center. The student broadcast team will be honored at the Center’s banquet on March 11, 2010. Pictured, CHSTV student-documentarian John Tipton films at Auschwitz.
The Center was established in 1983 by the University of San Diego Law Center and San Diego County Bar Association to help people, businesses and neighborhoods resolve disputes. The Center says that its Peacemaker Awards “celebrate the accomplishments of individuals and organizations for their ability to recognize a need for change and then craft a positive solution.”
We Must Remember, a powerful, 32-minute film that documents the journey of 16 Carlsbad High School filmmakers around the world and into the hearts and minds of Holocaust survivors, liberators and others, fits perfectly into that category, believes Executive Director Doug Green. He states, “The lessons and story that these teens share with the world sends a message that intolerance in any form is dangerous. These students have created a film that is inspiring young people across the country and in nations on other continents to embrace the medium of film-making as a vehicle for effecting change." Time Warner Cable Donates $4,000 to Carlsbad Educational Foundation During Family Science Night at Calavera Hills Middle School
On Thursday, January 21, 2010, Time Warner Cable sponsored Bioscience Bonanza, A Family Science Night at Calavera Hills Middle School in Carlsbad. More than 300 people, including more than 200 Calavera Hills Middle School students, attended Family Science Night, presented in partnership with the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.
In support of Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds initiative, the company’s Community Relations Manager Tiffany Lynch presented a $4,000 donation to Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF), a non-profit organization devoted to developing and launching educational and enrichment programs for more than 11,000 students in the Carlsbad Unified School District.
Patty Johnson, director of development for CEF, joined board members Tami Brennan, Amanda Clardy, Linda Moynan and Tim Royalty as well as Calavera Hills Middle School principal Catina Hancock to accept the donation. Time Warner Cable’s donation will support science labs in all three middle schools in the Carlsbad Unified School District, namely Calavera Hills, Aviara Oaks and Valley.
"There is clearly an immediate need for the young people of our nation to develop skills in science, technology, engineering and math,” said Lynch. “Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds initiative will help connect youth to hands-on learning opportunities, like Family Science Night, which can instill a sense of wonder and discovery – and hopefully inspire a lifelong exploration of science and technology.” Complete News Release Here.

District Family Comes Together at 1st Annual Mitchell Thorp Foundation Walkathon
A majority of the hundreds of people participating in the festivities and four-mile walk at the first annual Mitchell Thorp Foundation Walkathon that took place on January 23 at Carlsbad’s Poinsettia Park were Carlsbad Unified School District administrators, staff, students and families. Many served as volunteers; directing traffic, manning booths, performing entertainment and conducting other duties.
Proceeds from the Walkathon will provide financial support for families of Carlsbad High School students Chase Quartarone, who recently died of lymphoma, and Sam Reiser, who is battling this disease. In addition to suffering a weighty emotional toll, the families face staggering treatment costs.
Mitchell Thorp was a District student who died at age 18 after a five-year struggle against an undiagnosed illness. His parents, Beth and Brad Thorp, established the foundation in Mitchell’s honor to help the families of North County children facing life-threatening illnesses. Thorp Field at Poinsettia Park, where the Walkathon took place, is named after Mitchell.
Saying he was proud of the CUSD turnout, District Superintendent John A. Roach, Ed.D. states, “The District is a family, and so is the Carlsbad community. This is what families do: we support each other.”
